On 30 May 2023, the seventh National Science and Technology Workers' Day, the celebration of National Science and Technology Workers' Day and the Commendation Conference of National Innovation and Pioneering Award were held in the National Science and Technology Communication Centre. At the conference, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the Chinese Association for Science and Technology, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council announced the list of winners of the third National Innovation Prize. Mao Junfa, President of Shenzhen University and Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, was awarded the Third National Innovation and Striving for Precedence Award.
MAO Junfa is mainly engaged in the research of high-speed circuit interconnection and RF electronic packaging and serves as the head of the innovation group of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the head of the Basic Science Centre, and the chief scientist of the 973 in related fields; he has won the second prize of the National Natural Science, the second prize of the National Technical Invention, the second prize of the National Science and Technology Advancement, the second prize of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Prize for Scientific and Technological Innovations, as well as two second prizes of the National Achievements in Teaching. In addition, Mao Junfa is a Fellow of the Institute of Electronics in China (IEEE), Chairman of the Microwave Division, and IEEE Fellow.
It is understood that on the occasion of the seventh National Science and Technology Workers' Day, in order to further commend the individuals and collectives who have made outstanding contributions in the relevant fields of science and technology innovation facing the world's scientific and technological frontiers, facing the main battlefield of the economy, facing the country's major needs, and facing the people's life, health and social services, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, China Association for Science and Technology, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council have decided to award the seven teams with the Third National Medal for Innovation and Advancement, 26 comrades the Third National Medal for Innovation and Advancement, and 251 comrades the Third National Certificate for Innovation and Advancement. The awardees include more than 50 academicians as well as a number of academician candidates, National Jieqing and other top scholars.
Approved by the CPC Central Committee in 2017, the National Innovation and Striving for Precedence Award was jointly established by the China Association for Science and Technology and the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, to honour outstanding scientific and technological workers and outstanding teams who have made outstanding contributions in basic research and frontier exploration, major equipment and engineering research, achievement transformation and innovation and entrepreneurship, popularization of science and social services. The "National Innovation Award" is an important part and supplement of the national science and technology award system, and is an organic link between national science and technology awards and major talent programmes, and is regarded as a scientific and technological talent award second only to the National Top Science and Technology Award. The award is selected and commended once every three years, and each time 10 research teams are awarded medals, no more than 30 science and technology workers are awarded medals, enjoying the treatment of provincial and ministerial model workers, and no more than 300 science and technology workers are awarded certificates.
